First, I’ll explain how a piano stand works and what the many advantages of owning one are. After that, I’ll recommend several of the best models on the market so you can find the one that suits you best. All of this information will help you find the best piano stand possible!
What is a piano stand?

For us to be perfectly clear about how a piano stand works, there’s nothing better than a simple definition!
Definition
A piano stand is a platform on which you can place your digital piano. Of course, whether you need one depends on the type of piano you have.
If you have a console digital piano, such a tool will be of no use. The whole point of a console digital piano is that the instrument is mounted on an integrated stand.
However, if you have a portable digital piano, it will be important for you to have a piano stand. Some manufacturers offer a stand as an option with their instrument, but in most cases, you’ll have to buy one separately.
Finally, if you have a digital grand piano… well, you’re in luck! And obviously, such an accessory would be pointless in that case. Say, would you mind lending me your grand piano? Just once, come on…
In short, a piano stand will stabilize your piano and place it at the right height. This brings a number of significant advantages.
✅ Key strengths
A piano stand is useful for several reasons. Let’s look at the many benefits this accessory has on your practice.
Your instrument will be stable: Forgive me if I’m repeating myself, but this is a very important point. With a good piano stand, you can eliminate the stability issues you’d have when playing on an unsuitable surface.
You’ll adopt better posture: Ah, piano posture… it’s so often neglected! Many people invest in a portable digital piano and, realizing they don’t have a stand, improvise one. They play on a table, on their knees, on a bed… Honestly, I advise against this for the long term. Without a proper piano stand, you’ll create bad posture habits and develop chronic back pain.
Your instrument will have a dedicated spot: What do you do once you’ve finished playing on the dining room table? You go to eat with your family, and bam, tomato sauce falls on your piano! Oh no! Are you going to play on your bed now? And after a long night out, you jump on your mattress, and bam, a broken key! Okay, I’m exaggerating, as you can see. The main point is that a piano stand will give your instrument a dedicated, safe place where it’s secure.
You’ll agree that a piano stand has many positive points that would be a shame to miss out on. If I’ve convinced you to buy one, we’ll now look at the many models that might be right for you.
Choosing your piano stand
Now that you’re ready to choose your piano stand, several factors need to be considered. Your choice will depend on your budget and your preferences. Just so you know, I’ve sorted the models below by ascending price.
The Audibax Onyx 121 – the cheapest piano stand
If you don’t want to break the bank on a piano stand, the Audibax Onyx 121 is ideal. This stand is also height-adjustable and has a practical locking system. This means you can find the perfect height, adopt the best possible posture, and play in complete security. What’s more, this piano stand is suitable for 61- to 88-key models. It’s also lightweight for easy transport, and the anti-slip rubber lets you enjoy good stability—all at an unbeatable price!
However, keep in mind that its maximum load capacity is around 50 lbs. Even if your digital piano doesn’t weigh that much, avoid putting too much pressure on it, as it could weaken the stand. All in all, for its price, the Audibax Onyx 121 meets all expectations.

The Rockjam Xfinity piano stand is similar to the previous model in many ways. However, it also has a security strap system. These straps will greatly increase the stand’s safety and prevent it from tipping over. This model also offers infinite adjustment possibilities, unlike many stands that only have 4 or 5. Finally, the Rockjam Xfinity is pre-assembled, saving the less-handy among you from having to put it together!
As you can see, this piano stand offers a very good quality-to-price ratio.

The Rockjam Zfinity piano stand is an evolution of the previous model. It offers greatly improved stability thanks to its Z-shaped stand. This allows you to play intense passages much more freely, minimizing any movement from the stand. This model is also made from sturdy steel, giving it unfailing durability. But don’t get any ideas about climbing on it, okay?
With this piano stand, you’ll get a practical, stable, sturdy, and easy-to-adjust accessory. This model is therefore a prestigious choice for many pianists.

The Donner piano stand is definitely at the top of the rankings! This model is the best possible choice if you’re looking for perfect stability. It has exemplary solidity and can securely hold any portable digital piano without fail. It has all the advantages mentioned previously and adds a headphone holder, which allows you to store your headphones safely! Finally, this Donner piano stand is equipped with wheels for easy movement, letting you move your instrument from one room to another with total ease. Of course, these wheels have brakes to prevent the stand from moving even an inch!
In short, this model is clearly a piano stand with exemplary robustness.

Of course, many people will wonder if it’s possible to play without a piano stand. The answer is simple-it’s possible, but it’s not recommended. I’ll still give you some tips for playing without a piano stand, but keep in mind that there’s frankly nothing beneficial about it for your progress.
Playing on a table or desk
The first alternative to a piano stand is a table or a desk. Indeed, if your platform is stable, your instrument will be too! However, this solution is only half-good because you won’t be able to adjust your keyboard’s height. You’ll need a chair that’s at the correct height. And no, putting cushions under your chair isn’t the best idea in the world either! The best idea here would be to invest in an adjustable piano stool.
Frankly, I absolutely do not recommend this technique! In addition to not being practical, you’ll constantly have to make room to set up your digital piano in a place where it’s not meant to be…
Playing on your bed or on your lap
Now this is the height of a bad idea. Be careful, I’m talking about a situation where this would be your only way of playing. Many keyboard models are portable and have battery power, which can be great for playing outdoors by improvising a stand. However, this should remain an exception, not a habit.
With this technique, you will combine poor stability, incorrect height, and bad posture. A bed is made for sleeping! As for your knees… I don’t even need to elaborate on that. I absolutely do not recommend this technique, whose only purpose is to cause you to develop back and wrist pain. Avoid it at all costs!
Let’s sum up
In my opinion, a good piano stand is essential. It will help you gain stability, adopt better posture, and progress more effectively. If you have a portable digital piano without a piano stand, I sincerely believe you’ll make an excellent choice by getting one. Of course, take all the time you need to choose the one that best suits your needs!
Finally, don’t hesitate to learn about other accessories that are useful for any serious pianist. I’m thinking specifically of piano headphones and a sustain pedal.
